Managing your stress in today’s challenging times can be difficult, but there are many different techniques available that might help all of us live more peacefully.

Practicing “mindfulness” throughout the day can help you stress less. For example, exercising, focusing on your breathing, taking time to be out in nature, journaling, making sure you have sufficient and restful sleep, and, of course, using nutrition to assist your body during stressful times are all methods for stress reduction.

Did you know, listening to your body can help you recognize the signs of experiencing stress? Are your muscles feeling tense? Are you clenching your jaw? How is your breathing? We sometimes don’t breathe deeply and thoroughly when we’re under stress.

When you find your stress-levels begin affecting your life, give this technique a try.

It utilizes our 5 senses: Sight, Touch, Sound, Taste, and Smell.

For example, if we were to use our “sight sense,” we might look at a photograph or picture we love that could transport us back to when we were experiencing happiness and joy.

“Touch” can reduce stress through an experience such as wrapping ourselves in a soft blanket or petting a dog or cat if we have one available. We could also ask for a hand, foot, or neck massage if we have a partner or person available to give one. Human touch is a natural stress reducer.

The sense of “sound” can reduce stress almost instantaneously. Listen to calming music. Consider the purchase of a small water fountain to experience the soothing sound of water in the background. Find some wind chimes that make you smile while listening to them.

“Taste” is an easier way to reduce stress, but you have to be sure the choices are healthy ones. A small piece of dark chocolate melting in your mouth or a steaming cup of aromatic tea can be just the ticket for stress reduction. Healthy snacks spaced throughout the day can also be a break from stressful situations for a few minutes.

Finally, the sense of “smell” can transport us back to moments in our life where we were relaxed and peaceful. Essential oils, candles, flowers, or aromas from bread baking are just a few ways to step back into moments when life was more comfortable and less stressful.
